Learn About Your Back and the Potential Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment

Vertebrae

The bones that form the vertebral column are known as the vertebrae.

They provide a sturdy and supple pillar that supports your body while protecting your spinal cord.

These bones are located in the region between the neck and the lower back. Due to surgery or genetics, specific individuals may be born with an additional vertebra or may be missing one. This will be taken into consideration throughout the development of your treatment plan.

In order for you to maintain an upright position and bend and twist your torso or neck, a number of essential components in your back must all be functioning properly.

Spinal joints

The facet joints, which are also known as Z-joints, and the intervertebral joints are examples of spinal joints. These are the points of attachment between the vertebrae in your spine. They operate similarly to a hinge, permitting the spine to move in a regulated manner. These joints ensure that weight is distributed evenly across the spinal column, contribute to spinal stability, and help determine how the spine moves.

Discs

In between each of the vertebrae in your spine, there is a cushion-like substance called a disc.

These discs provide several functions, including the absorption of shock, the allowance of movement, the support of spinal flexibility, and the prevention of your vertebrae from rubbing against one another.

Spinal cord

Beginning in the brain and travelling down the back through the spine, the spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of nerves.

It is a crucial component of the central nervous system, assisting in the transmission of messages between the brain and the body. This enables us to feel sensations and to move about.

Additional nerves

A large number of nerves originate from the spinal cord and travel via gaps that are located between the bones in your spine.

They establish connections to various regions of the body and transmit messages to those areas.

Ligaments and muscles

A variety of muscles and ligaments in your back work together to support you, provide stability, and enable you to move around and carry the weight of your upper body.

Chiropractors are trained to identify and treat problems that are related to the spine and the musculoskeletal system, so they can assist you in treating your back and a variety of other issues that you might experience.

We number the vertebrae according to their position in the spine:

  • C1-7: These are the cervical vertebrae, and they make up the neck.

  • T1–12: These are the thoracic vertebrae from the neck to the middle of the back.

  • L1–5: These are the vertebrae located in the lower back region of the spine.

  • S1-S5: These vertebrae are fused, collectively referred to as the sacrum.

CHRONIC BACK PAIN

Who Is Affected by Back Pain?

Back pain is a widespread condition, and most of us will experience it at some point in our lives.

Your chances of being affected are increased if you are:

  • Inactive or have weakness in the core muscles.

  • Being overweight, or carrying around additional weight, places additional stress on your back.

  • Middle-aged or older.

  • Someone who smokes cigarettes: This reduces the amount of blood that flows to the spine and increases the amount that you cough, both of which can put pressure on your back.

  • At your desk all day, this is especially true if your posture is bad.

  • Required to do physical labour as a part of your job, such as heavy lifting, tugging, pushing, or twisting.
