NECK PAIN

Understanding Your Pain

Your Physical Form

Your body is a complex system composed of interconnected parts. The vertebrae, joints, discs, nerves, ligaments, and muscles of the neck all work together to support and move your head while protecting your spinal cord.

A Closer Inspection

Seven vertebrae make up your cervical spine, which are numbered C1 through C7 from top to bottom.

These structures serve a critical function in providing support for the head, allowing for a wide variety of head movements, and preserving the spinal cord.

Aetiology

The nervous system sends messages throughout the body.

Proper spinal alignment may enhance this communication.

Symptoms

You may experience a very insignificant amount of discomfort that subsides in a short period of time, or you may experience pain so severe that it is challenging to move around, focus, or sleep.  Additionally, you may experience stiffness and find it difficult to move your head.

Our trained chiropractors have a clinical interest in assessing and managing pain at Steven Payne Chiropractor. Our staff is dedicated to alleviating chronic pain and preventing the recurrence of neck pain by addressing the underlying causes of the condition. We achieve this through our in-depth understanding of the musculoskeletal system.

NECK PAIN

Common Types of Pain

Cervical Degenerative

Joint Disease (DJD)

When the cushioning discs in the cervical spine gradually wear down over time, this condition is referred to as cervical DJD,

which results in the gradual loss of one or more of the cushioning discs in the cervical spine.  The most common type of cervical spine is usually found at the levels of C5/6 and C6/7.

Poor posture, injuries, heredity, metabolic disease, anatomical anomalies, joint damage, repetitive joint movements, surgery, and even certain drugs are all potential causes of this.

However, it is more common in those over the age of fifty.

Cervical Discogenic Pain Syndrome

Serving as cushions between the vertebrae in our spine, the discs help prevent the vertebrae from grinding against each other, allowing us to move easily.  If a disc becomes injured, it has the potential to cause pain and discomfort.

There are several causes for this type of damage, including direct injury, repetitive use, bad posture, rapid movements, or wear and tear that results from ageing.

Cervical Facet Syndrome

Small joints that serve to stabilise the spinal column are called facet joints or Z-joints.

This syndrome occurs when these joints get inflamed or injured, resulting in pain.

This may be the result of an injury, whiplash, cervical disc problems, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Cervical Meniscoidal Entrapment

It is possible for the soft tissue that provides support for the neck to become trapped by the neck joints, resulting in pain.  This can occur due to causes such as incorrect biomechanics, prolonged periods of inactivity, muscular spasms, or poor posture.

Neck Sprains or Strains

This is when injury develops to the soft tissues of your neck—the ligaments, muscles, discs, or other structures that surround the cervical spine—as a result of severe stretching, tearing, or rupture.
Direct trauma, overuse, weariness, poor posture,

and unexpected movements are all possible

causes for this to occur.

Torticollis (Wry Neck)

A twisting of the neck that rotates it to an abnormal angle is referred to as torticollis. Due to its complex nature,

This ailment often requires treatment by a professional.
Although this condition can be present at birth,

it can also be induced by trauma, viral infections,

abrupt motions, or irritation from the ligaments in the cervical spine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Relieve my Discomfort at home?

Some home remedies that may provide relief include applying either hot or cold packs to the area, using over-the-counter pain medication, and practising stretching and exercises intended to improve posture.

If you are not aware of the origin of your discomfort, though, several home therapies can do more harm than good.

To receive the highest quality of care and treatment, it is best to seek the guidance of a qualified specialist.

What kinds of Therapies can I look Forward to Receiving?

Several treatments can provide pain relief, including spinal adjustments, postural alignment, joint mobilisations, electrotherapy, gentle stretches, and deep tissue therapy. Additionally, minimising uncomfortable activities or positions that contribute to strain, in combination with rest, might assist in alleviating pain.

Heating and cold therapy are two other methods that we at Steven Payne Chiropractor can employ to reduce inflammation and tension.  It is suggested that ice be used for individuals who have injuries, discogenic pain, meniscoid entrapment, and cervical facet syndrome.  Medical professionals advise individuals with degenerative joint conditions to use heat.
