WHAT IS CERVICAL DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE?

When the cushioning discs in the cervical spine, which is the part of the spine located in the neck, begin to break down as a result of wear and tear.

This is known as degenerative joint disease, which is characterised by the gradual loss of one or more of these discs.


The most prevalent type of degenerative joint degeneration in the cervical spine is typically found at the C5/6 and C6/7 levels.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS OF CERVICAL DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE?

You Typically Encounter:

  • Discomfort in the upper shoulders & the neck

  • Pain and stiffness that are exacerbated by repetitive or strenuous activities like working on a computer

  • Diminished range of motion in your neck

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF NECK PAIN RELATED TO

CERVICAL DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE?

The reasons include:

  • Biomechanical abnormalities, including things like slouching or bad posture

  • The study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics is known as genetics.

  • Metabolic ailments that affect the bones, such as osteoporosis and Paget's illness

  • Abnormalities in anatomy that are present in children

  • Injury to a joint or broken bone

  • Joint movement that is repeated

  • Secondary degenerative joint disease that developed after spinal or skeletal surgery

WHO ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO NECK PAIN CAUSED BY CERVICAL DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE?

Research has shown:

  • Cervical degenerative joint disease is most prevalent in persons over the age of fifty due to age-related changes in tendons and ligaments that reduce the strength of the joints and cartilage, and a decrease in the delivery of nutrients to the cartilage.

  • 45% of people who do not exhibit any symptoms are affected by DJD.
