WHAT IS SCHEUERMANN’S DISEASE?

It is a malformation in the thoracic or thoracolumbar spine caused by improper growth and alterations in the vertebra.  It may be restricted to several thoracic vertebrae or the entire thoracic and lumbar spine.

It is not uncommon for healthy adolescents to have a rounded upper back, which is frequently referred to as a "humpback" in the middle region of their back.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SCHEUERMANN’S DISEASE?

You Typically Encounter:

  • Faint, aching discomfort in the middle of the back that comes and goes and is worse while the person is active, but gets better when they rest

  • Exhaustion and soreness in the middle of the back

  • An observable disfigurement, an inadequate posture or a "hump" in the middle of the back area

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF SCHEUERMANN'S DISEASE?

The development of the condition is related to a genetic component; however, no mechanism of inheritance has been determined to be associated with it.

Even though the cause is still unknown, there are a few theories that attempt to explain it:

  • Trauma to the vertebral endplate

  • Malnutrition refers to a condition that develops when the body is not receiving the proper nutrients in sufficient amounts.

  • Poor bone density
